FASCISM AND LIBERALISM

Faschismus wird meist als Angriff auf die liberale Gesellschaft, ihre Politik, Kultur und Wirtschaft angesehen. Überall wird dazu aufgerufen, den liberalen „freien Westen“ zu verteidigen, während sich die EU gleichzeitig zunehmend abschottet und der Diskurs über den Abbau sozialer Wohlfahrtsmaßnahmen zur Disziplinierung und Militarisierung der Gesellschaft sich von Tag zu Tag radikalisiert. Der Zusammenhang zwischen liberaler Tradition und Faschismus wird dabei oft bewusst ignoriert und geleugnet. Der Faschismus war und ist jedoch keineswegs das Gegenteil des Liberalismus, sondern steht in seiner Ideologie und Praxis in einem dialektischen Verhältnis zu diesem. Der historische Faschismus kann somit als radikaler Versuch gelesen werden, die Krise des Liberalismus durch die Überwindung seiner inneren Widersprüche zu überwinden. Diese Tendenzen treten derzeit wieder offen zutage. Wir wollen daher die Beziehung zwischen Liberalismus und Faschismus aus politischer, psychoanalytischer, geldpolitischer und wirtschaftlicher Perspektive diskutieren.
Pavlos Roufos schrieb seine Doktorarbeit über die historische Entwicklung des deutschen Neoliberalismus von der Weimarer Republik bis zur Eurokrise. Derzeit lehrt er an verschiedenen Universitäten Europäische Integration, Geschichte des Neoliberalismus und Global Governance. Sein Buch „Happy Future is a Thing of the Past“ über die Krise in Griechenland ist bei Reaktion Books erschienen.

Luca Bertoni ist Mitglied des französischen Kollektivs Réalité und arbeitet derzeit an der Herausgabe eines Buches über Geldpolitik und Klassenkampf beim Verlag L'Asymétrie.

Steen Thorsson arbeitet als Radiojournalist und befindet sich in der Ausbildung zum Psychoanalytiker. Gerade hat er das Buch „Burn Baby Burn“ veröffentlicht. Darin geht es um den Zusammenhang von kapitalistischer Produktionsweise, der Klimakrise und verschiedener Formen ihrer Leugnung. Er wird über den »subjektiven Faktor« der aktuellen faschistischen Dynamiken sprechen. Die von den regressiven Demagogen angebotenen Lösung von Trump bis Alice Weidel versprechen zwar keinen materiellen, aber einen wichtigen psychologischen Gewinn: die Lust an der Zerstörung. Die sozialen Verwerfungen, die die kapitalistische Produktionsweise mit sich bringt, kann im destruktiven Wahn der Masse verdrängt und verleugnet werden.

Fascism is usually seen as an attack on liberal society, its politics, culture, and economy. There are calls everywhere to defend the liberal “Free West,” while at the same time the EU is increasingly closing itself off and there is a from day to day more radicalized discourse about dismantling social welfare measures to discipline and militarize society. The connection between the liberal tradition and fascism is often deliberately ignored and denied. However, fascism was and is by no means the antithesis of liberalism; rather, it is dialectically linked to liberalism in its ideology and practice. Historical fascism can thus be read as a radical attempt to overcome the crisis of liberalism by overcoming its internal contradictions. These tendencies are currently reemerging openly. We therefore want to discuss the relationship between liberalism and fascism from a political, psychoanalytical, monetary policy, and economic perspective.
Pavlos Roufoswrote his PhD on the historical trajectory of German neoliberalism from the Weimar Republic up until the Eurozone crisis. He is currently teaching European integration, the history of neoliberalism and global governance at different Universities. His book “Happy Future is a Thing of the Past” about the Greek crisis has been published by Reaktion Books.

Steen Thorssonworks as a radio journalist and is training to become a psychoanalyst. He has just published the book Burn Baby Burn, which deals with the connection between capitalist modes of production, the climate crisis, and various forms of climate denial. He will talk about the “subjective factor” of current fascist dynamics. The solutions offered by regressive demagogues from Trump to Alice Weidel may not promise material gains, but they do promise an important psychological one: the pleasure of destruction. The social upheavals brought about by the capitalist mode of production can be suppressed and denied in the destructive frenzy of the masses.
