ANTIMILITARISM, DESERTION AND CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTION
(Martin Barzilai and Or, an activist from New Profile)
english
„This genocide, not unlike others throughout history, was enabled by long-term militarization of society, by glorification of the army and by dehumanising narratives. [...]
In contrary to what Israeli propaganda wants us to believe, Jewish safety cannot be guaranteed via the oppression of millions of people, nor will eroding every aspect of Gazan life grant safety to people in Israel – Jews, Palestinians, migrant workers, refugees and others, who are in fact all likely to become less and less safe as militarisation expands and deepens.“ Excerpt from New Profile’s Statement on the Gaza Genocide.
In this panel, we want to discuss examples and perspectives of anti-militarist resistance against the war machine in Israel and beyond.
Martin Barzilai was born in Montevideo (Uruguay). In 1994 he obtained a photography degree from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure Louis Lumière in Paris. He is particularly interested in political, social and environmental issues in his native continent, but he also worked on these themes in France, in Palestine-Israël and in Tunisia. He regularly collaborates with the press and different magazines (New York Times, Rolling Stone, L’Obs, Les Echos, Le Monde…).
In 2014 and 2015 he was selected for the National Visual Arts Fair of Argentina, in Buenos Aires. Martin also has taught photography in Paris, Barcelona, Montevideo and Buenos Aires.
In november 2017, he published the book "Refuzniks, dire non à l'armée en Israël" (Libertalia) with the support of Amnesty International France. His recent book „We Refuse: Saying No to the Army in Israel“ features the voices of those in Israel who refuse to do military service in the Israeli Defence Forces, so as not to participate in dirty wars in the West Bank and in Gaza. It is available in English via Merlin Press.

New Profile was established in 1998 as a feminist anti militaristic movement which acts for a civil society and promote just peace, non-violence, and a just and democratic society. They believe that militarism–which is deeply rooted in Israeli society–makes society more violent, sexist and racist, weakens civilian and democratic values, blocks the path to peace, and prevents the end of the Israeli occupation of Palestine, perpetuating human rights violations against Palestinians and other marginalized groups.
Or is a Jewish Arab, queer and a vegan. Or is an activist for more then 20 years for human and animal rights, against colonialism and arms trade.
